I started racing competitively about 10 years ago after taking a few years off from running in high school. The way I got back into running was kind of odd. It was about a year after I graducated college and started working full-time, you know the old 9-5 routine.. I was working at an entry level position and would regularly buy lunch from the 7-11 across the street from the office. One day, as I was dressed in my business professional attire and dress shoes, I jaywalked across the street and had to run to avoid an oncoming car. And that split second of running got me back into running again. That was also the inspiration to start my running blog, here is one of my first posts. Ahh, fond memories!

Fast forward 10 years and now I have ran 3 full marathons, dozens of 5K and 10Ks, and over 100 half marathons. That is a lot of race t-shirts, medals, and money spent on race registrations! Most of the races I have ran were local to San Diego. I have made mini-vacations out of a few domestic races (Seattle, Vegas, New York, Chicago..). But I’ve also ran a few within driving distance that were very similar to San Diego, for example, Playa Del Rey, Long Beach, and OC. The next race will be by the ocean as well, but with a slight twist. The Surf City 10 is a 10 mile, 10K, and 5K race in Huntington Beach…at night! I’ve ran a few races at night and what I learned from the night runs I’ve ran in high school, you run a lot faster. Most likely because it is dark, your adrenaline is pumping, you cannot see ahead very clearly and are more aware of your surroundings. I’m hoping the same happens with Surf City 10. I like the description from the website:

Chase the Sun As You Run Highway 1!

Join us for an unparalleled experience as we flip the script and bring the party to Surf City, USA beginning at 6:30 p.m. right at the Huntington Beach Pier. The splash of the surf, the clean salt air and epic sunset colored skies will follow runners for a Saturday night experience along 10-miles of traffic-free Pacific Coast Highway. Choose from 10-mile, 10k and 5k courses on Saturday, September 21. #RunatSUNDOWN
