Running is called cardio because it works out the cardiovascular system. This is the system that keeps your heart and surrounding organs healthy. It’s essential that everybody takes up a sort of cardio fitness for this reason, even if it’s just walking! Running is obviously the best thing for this system though, so start off small and work your way up if you can.
Strengthen Your Legs
Running can encourage strong legs as you pound the pavements with all of your might. You might notice that you get more definition in your legs, or that stubborn fat comes off them. A great playlist can encourage you to keep going when you feel like giving up!
Improve Stamina and Endurance
Running greatly improves your stamina and endurance the more you do it. Not just for future runs either, but for your life in general. You should be able to do absolutely anything for much longer than you would normally, whether you’re carrying your shopping up the road or doing a zumba class. By taking up a regular running fitness program you’ll become more able in all areas of your life!

Running is obviously a huge calorie/fat blaster. However, it depends on how you do it. If you run at a steady pace or the same pace for a while, you’ll be burning more calories than anything. The faster you run, the more calories you burn. If you work HIIT into your runs where you give it your all for 30 seconds then rest for 1 minute, you’ll burn fat and calories. Burning fat is a great way to lean out your physique rather than just ‘losing weight’. It’s great to mix it up with different types and styles of runs rather than just doing the same thing again and again.

Running is a fabulous way to clear your head! Not only should the body be fit, but the mind too. That’s real overall fitness. Running is the most primal thing we can do. It will get rid of stress and release endorphins, which is a great way to feel happier. Remember when Forrest Gump was confused and stressed? He just ran and ran. There’s a good reason he did that, even if he didn’t know why he was doing it!
