Temecula Spartan Race 2016 Super Distance Race Report

Posted on Jan 31, 2016 under Race | No Comment

Spartan-Race-Logo

Runners who complete the Spartan Race trifecta will run all 3 distances in one calendar year. I went the unconventional (e.g. easier) route by completing the trifecta across 3 separate years! Training for one Spartan Race a year is tough, I don’t know how people train all year long for these races. It is too physically and mentally draining! I remember telling myself that I would never compete in another Spartan Race after the Beast in Temecula during the ridiculous heat wave in 2014. But I had another entry last year and decided to just do the Sprint, which still wasn’t that easy. And since I had completed those 2 distances already, I really had no choice but to compete in the final Super distance and get that last medal wedge. I mean, what was I going to do with 2/3 of a medal?

I was very pleased with the results for the Spartan Super: ~9 miles, 2:13:23, age group place: 61st, gender: 319, overall: 337. My initial goal was to complete the race in about 2 hours so I was definitely within that range which I’m happy about. Read the rest of this entry »

Winter Track & Field Classic #2 Race Report

Posted on Jan 22, 2016 under Race | No Comment

sponsors_usatf3 years ago I decided to run one of these track and field events (the last time I competed in these types of events was in high school 9 years before!). This event was hosted by a local high school, primarily geared toward high school athletes that want to get some practice racing before the track season officially starts in the Spring. But the races are open to the public, so I decided to participate and see what type of speed I still had in me. I must have forgotten what I wrote in my initial race report because it sounds like I had a terrible time! But since that last race, I have been playing indoor soccer almost every week (which involves a lot of sprinting) and recently, been doing high intensity workouts from the Insanity program. I felt like I would run fairly fast this time around, but was still nervous about having to compete against younger, faster high school runners. I really didn’t know how to tackle the races since I haven’t been training for it. I didn’t want to start too fast and tire out for the rest of the race. But I also didn’t want to start too slow and not have enough distance left after picking up the pace. Here are the official results: 800 meters: 2:20:79, 8/16 overall, 1 mile: 5:20:99, 11/18 overall. I was actually pleasantly surprised at how well I ran, I was definitely tired during and after each event but ran very smart. Read the rest of this entry »

Los Angeles Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon 2015 Race Report

Posted on Dec 25, 2015 under Race | No Comment

It’s been 2 months since I ran this race, but better late than never, right? The Rock ‘n’ Roll Los Angeles half marathon was the final race of the 3-pack Tour Pass that I purchased at the beginning of the year. I had already run 2 other destination races: Rock ‘n’ Roll Seattle and Chicago. I actually didn’t want to run this particular race for a number of reasons: I’ve ran this race many times before, it was the weekend before my New Zealand vacation, and I hadn’t been running as often as I would have liked before a half marathon. But I couldn’t find any other race that would fit within my year-end schedule. LA is always a safe bet because it’s my hometown, so I can always make it an excuse to visit the family. And the results weren’t too terrible: 1:37:55 (7:29 min/mile), AG: 38/658, gender: 176/3290, overall: 185/7797.  Read the rest of this entry »

Spartan Race Temecula Sprint Race Report

Posted on Oct 18, 2015 under Race | 1 Comment

spartan race sprintAs mentioned in last year’s race report, I said I wasn’t going to participate in the Spartan Race again. But I had another opportunity to run this race again this year and decided to just do the Sprint, which was a lot more reasonable at 3-5 miles rather than 12+ in last year’s Beast race. Even though this race was a lot shorter, there were still 20 obstacles that we had to complete, compared to the 30 last year. On the website it said that the top participants complete the Sprint in about 40 minutes, so I was hoping to finish my race in about an hour or so. I must have underestimated how long and difficult the obstacles and hills were going to be, but I finished at 1:33:51 but placed 18th in my age group and 111 (out of 5,317) overall for the Sprint race. RAD & LG

I had the opportunity to participate in the Color Me Rad run at the Marine Corps Air Station in San Diego, while testing out the new LG Tone Active bluetooth headset. I’ll provide a quick recap of the race with some photos, followed by a more in-depth post about my experience using the headset.  Read the rest of this entry »

Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago Half Marathon Race Report

Posted on Aug 18, 2015 under Race | No Comment

chi_15_fullcolor_logoThe Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago Half Marathon is the 2nd race in my TourPass 3-Pack (the first race taking place about a month ago in Seattle). I was supposed to run this same race back in 2012, but life got in the way so I had to defer and run the Rock ‘n’ Roll Brooklyn 10K instead. I wanted to run more destination races this year and the timing worked out to run RnR Chicago. I’ve been to New York City 3 times already and wanted to see how Chicago compared to it, in respect to the city itself, tourist attractions and of course, food! I heard that Chicago weather in July was pretty bad, but we experienced an unusually hot and humid weekend when I visited! Because of that my results were less than ideal: 1:52:21 (8:35 min/mile), age group: 124/807, gender: 682/4877, overall: 1,015/12,075. I had initially planned to run about 1:35, so that was almost 20 minutes slower! But I wasn’t the only one who ran slower than expected, the weather really caused a toll on runners during this race. I guess not all races can be in ideal weather conditions. Read the rest of this entry »

San Diego Fair 5K Race Report

Posted on Jun 28, 2015 under Race | No Comment

SDFair5K-logo-FINAL-for-dark-bgI seem to always run a short, fun race the week after a tough, long race. This is actually ideal though since I’d rather get the hard one out of the way first so I can enjoy the easier one. The San Diego Fair 5K is a fairly new race that takes place around the Del Mar Fairgrounds, where the San Diego Fair takes place. It’s a little different to run through the fairgrounds before they open so you don’t experience all of the crowds, rides, attractions and deliciously fried foods. One of the perks for running this race is that it acts as a ticket to the fair for the day as well as discounts for others as well as a free entry to the fair another day. So the event website said that there would be timing chips, but we did not get them in our race packet. Most people do take this race as a fun race anyways, but I usually run it pretty hard and would have liked an official race result. But according to my phone, I ran an 18:45 but Endomondo only recorded 2.86 miles! It definitely wasn’t 3.1 miles, although the phone might have missed the part where we ran underneath a bridge, but I’m pretty sure it was still under 3 miles, so no PR this time.  Read the rest of this entry »

Rock ‘n’ Roll Seattle Half Marathon Race Report

Posted on Jun 28, 2015 under Race | No Comment

The last destination race I ran was at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas half marathon, which is definitely a tough act to follow. Fortunately, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Seattle half marathon was just as much fun, although a little different when it came to pre and post-race activities. Most people have enough trouble as it is to fit in some type of workout when traveling, having to run a half marathon is a whole other issue. But I knew I would be able to run it around my average time. The plan was to spend the day in Vancouver and then drive back to Seattle the night before the race. Unfortunately, there was a huge line at the Canada/US border so I didn’t get into Seattle until very late at night. I ended up only get about 3 hours of sleep before the race! Despite that, I was still able to run a pretty decent time. Results: 1:37 (7:24 min/mile), 36/540 age group, 197/4125 males, 234/11071 overall. What was even more impressive was my splits throughout the race: 5K, 23:59 (7:44 min/mile), 10K, 47:06 (7:35 min/mile), 10 mi, 1:15 (7:30). So I was able to run negative splits throughout the race and because of that, was able to pick up the pace later on in the race and have a strong finish. Read the rest of this entry »

UCSD Triton 5K 2015 Race Report

Posted on Jun 10, 2015 under Race | No Comment

triton 5k

This is my 3rd time running the Triton 5K (the same number of years they started hosting this race on a weekend vs Fridays when I was still in school). And unless I decide to move away from San Diego, I don’t see myself not running this race. It’s a great way to support my alma mater and it gives me an excuse to visit the campus. I was hoping for a slightly faster time, but it’s still good nonetheless. Results: 19:48 (6:23 min/mile), 8/167 age group, 77/2,478 overall. You’d think I’d learn to pace myself in this race since it was my 3rd time, but it didn’t happen. Even though I knew I wouldn’t be able to stay with the lead runners, I still tried.
